29th Thurso Open

195 swimmers from 10 different clubs competed in this years 29th annual Swimming Meet with Inverness winning the Munro Shield for the second year in a row despite the strong competition from other clubs. 

The 40 Thurso swimmers tallied a total of 72 personal bests (PBs) between them along with 3 Gold medals, 6 Silver, 3 Bronze and 5 fourths. 

Stewart Coulden-Smith won the Bentley Cup for the best performance by a Thurso Swimmer. Stewart only joined TASC in September last year having never recorded an official PB. Since then he has worked his way rapidly through the squads to reach A squad.

The Boys 14+ relays did extremely well in the Medley relay and Free relay with Thurso A Medley team - consisting of Ryan Sutherland, Martin Cowie, Craig Spargo and David Sutherland - winning gold and Thurso A Free team - David Sutherland, Ryan Sutherland, Ranald Cartriwght and Craig Spargo - winning a second gold for the Club. The Thurso B Medley team – Robin Foster, Bruce Stewart, Stewart Coulden-Smith and Ranald Cartwright – took fourth, and Thurso B Free team – Martin Cowie, Jason Ridgley, Bruce Stewart and Stewart Coulden-Smith – took a second fourth. 

The Girls 14+ relay – Shannon Noble, Ashley Mackenzie, Gillian Firth and Rhona Cartwright - did well too taking silver in the Free relay. 

The 13 and under Girls and Boys relays both did well with the Boys – Shaun Gray, Jack Buchanan, Shaun Davidson, and Mark Budge – taking bronze in the medley relay and the Girls – Elinor Spencer, Kelley Tadd, Maisie Moran and Sophie Macleod - taking fourth in the Free relay.

In the 10 and under girls Emma Budge won silver in the 50m freestyle. Also swimming were Louise Sinclar, Nicole Cowie, Kerry Moran, Isla Cartwright, Ghislaine Barry and Eilidgh Geddes.

 

There were two medal winners in the 10 and under boys with Joe Spencer winning fourth and Tim Ridgley winning bronze in 50m Breastroke. Lawrence Muller, Alan Cowan, Colin Buchanan, Craig Yuille and Scott Yuille were swimming in this age group too.

Although there were no medal winners in either the boys or girls 11/12 age group there was many PBs gained. A thanks has to be given to Ashleigh Peddie who stepped in last minute for the finals of the 14+ girls Medley relay. The other swimmers were Kelly Tadd, Sophie Macleod, Masie Moran, Elinor Spencer, Laura Stewart, Shaun Gray, Shaun Davidson, Rorie Stewart and Mark Budge.

In the 13/14 age group Robin Foster won gold in 100m backstroke, Jason Ridgley won bronze in both 100m backstroke and 100m breastroke and Stewart Coulden-Smith won silver in 100m breastroke and 100m freestyle. Other swimmers were Rhona Cartwright, Shannon Noble, Connor Petrie and Jack Buchanan.

The 15+ age group was very successful. For the girls Ashley Mackenzie won bronze in 100m breastroke. Gillian Firth was also swimming. For the Boys Martin Cowie won silver in 100m breastroke and broke the 1 minute barrier in 100m freestyle, Ranald Cartwright came 4th in 100m butterfly and also broke the 1 minute barrier for 100m freestyle, Ryan Sutherland won gold in 100m backstroke and bronze in both 50m and 100m freestyle, Craig Spargo won bronze in 100m butterfly and came 4th in 100m freestyle. David Sutherland was very successful winning gold in 100m freestyle, missing out on the meet record by 7/100th of a second, he won silver in 100m butterfly and came 4th in 100m backstroke and 100m breastroke. Also swimming was Bruce Stewart.
